BONE BROTH 101

Bone broth is quickly becoming the “it” item in the food and drink world. Salma Hayek credits the broth as her “beauty secret.” Basketball star, Kobe Bryant says it helps to heal his injuries faster. New Yorkers are lining up around the block to buy it in go-cups from Brodo, a take-away window in the East Village. And now Gulf Coasters have access via PHO by Pan, an extension of Orange Beach Concierge.

But what is bone broth? Bone broth (typically beef, chicken, or turkey) is made by simmering the meat and bones, often with other ingredients like vegetables, herbs, and spices. It’s cooked for a long time and with lots of love for approximately 8-10 hours, which means that more nutrients – including collagen – are pulled into the broth.

Carrie Montgomery, local Registered Dietitian, says this of the bone-broth-craze, “Bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur being amongst the list.  Broth’s also contain compounds often sold as pricey supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain. As if that’s not enough excitement, the gelatin in bone broths contains amino acids arginine, glycine, glutamine and proline further contributing to broth’s healing properties. I’ve personally had to double my order of broth from Orange Beach Concierge! It’s such a delicious and convenient way to keep my broth intake in check.”

Now while there isn’t a plethora of research about consuming bone broth in particular, the theory is that this collagen-rich broth provides the amino acid building blocks for our connective tissues which support the body’s natural ability to repair these tissues… essentially making it better than Botox! (Okay, not really, but it can help!)

Other proven benefits of Bone Broth:

  • It fills you up – without adding pounds
  • It detoxifies your body
  • It heals your gut
  • It supplies you with easy-to-absorb essential minerals
  • It aids digestion
  • It heals your joints
  • It’s anti-inflammatory

We know! How are you just finding out about this gem? But the Gulf Coast and its travelers are in luck. Bone Broth has arrived!
