Sometimes you do not need to reinvent the recipe wheel.  Often the experts before us have paved the road for us. Chef David is an Alton Brown fan.  Alton’s recipes are easy and understandable for the at-home cook.  So for this month’s recipe, we are going to keep it seasonal and simple with macerated strawberries by Alton Brown.

Strawberries are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants and check out the benefits:

  • IMPROVES IMMUNE FUNCTIONING
  • LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE
  • TREATS SYMPTOMS OF ARTHRITIS AND GOUT
  • OFFERS PROTECTION AGAINST CANCER
  • PROMOTES HEALTHY EYESIGHT
  • REGULATES BLOOD SUGAR

This recipe has several of my favorite ingredients but to keep in alignment with my dietary choices I eat 2 to 3 fresh strawberries every morning.  Strawberries are a staple of sweetness for me, but if you want to indulge, follow the simple recipe below and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS:

1 pint medium strawberries, rinsed, hulled and sliced

1/2 bottle (325ml) red wine, Pinot Noir or Merlot will do nicely

2 tablespoons orange blossom honey

1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground

1/2 cup sugar

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all the ingredients in a large airtight container and stir gently. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.  Serve.
